Eligibility is determined by the assessment process or completion of BOTH <em>English Writing 50</em> with a grade of C or better AND a grade of &#8220;P | Passing&#8221; in <em>English Writing 59</em>.</p>
<p><strong></strong></p>
<p><span style="color: #414170;"><strong>COURSE DESCRIPTION:</strong></span><br />
<em>English Writing 100</em> uses individual and group instruction to help students improve critical thinking and writing skills.  Students will write a <span style="text-decoration: underline;">minimum</span> of 6,000 words including at least two in-class midterm essays and a departmental in-class final exam essay.  Writing assignments are often based on reading analysis.  The course prepares students for ENGWR 300: College Composition.</p>
<p>In addition, the principals of grammar and punctuation, effective sentence and essay structure, and MLA documentation will be discussed and reinforced.</p>
<p><span style="color: #414170;"><strong>STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:</strong></span><br />
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:</p>
<ul>
<li>Compose fully developed, structured, and unified essays;</li>
<li>Demonstrate knowledge of the writing process through pre-writing, drafting, and revision;</li>
<li>Support his/her opinions and conclusions using appropriate evidence;</li>
<li>Demonstrate the ability to use varied sentences structures and types;</li>
<li>Construct sentences with precise and appropriate words;</li>
<li>Examine and evaluate his/her writing for errors;</li>
<li>Apply critical reading and reasoning skills; and</li>
<li>Analyze and respond to readings and incorporate the ideas of others into his/her own writing.</li>
